Making a garden is to create an atmosphere, whether it is an extended outdoor space for urban gardens or it is a rolling landscape for a country house, it is an atmosphere that evokes emotions, reflects its story and individual to you. From concept to form, from planning of a productive garden to design of gate and railings, where possible, I prefer to see each project through to the very fine details. Below are some examples of gardens completed and in making.

A cor-ten steel and topiary garden in Oxfordshire

Situated in rural Oxfordshire, this town garden of c. 0.25 acre, has just completed an interior upgrade to a spacious, artful yet contemporary living space. The brief was to design an equally inspiring garden with a functional productive garden to supply the house, formal water features and several entertainment areas.

The formal, highly structural feature of topiaries, espaliered fruit trees, lush ornamental planting and the warm rusty feature of the cor-ten steel creates a contrasting yet crisply contemporary garden that complements the rural surrounding combining beauty and utility.

A naturalist country garden in Buckinghamshire

Situated within Chiltern ANOB and on top of a hill, this country garden of c. 1 acre occupies an unbeatable view across a lush valley beyond. Once part of an orchard renowned for Buckinghamshire Archduke cherries, the majority of garden has been neglected for 20+ years.

The brief is to create a garden that is in tune with the rural landscape without introducing excessive hardscaping. This ongoing project requires much thought into naturalist planting plan and intimacy vs openness.

A complete planting design in Beaconsfield

Set in central Beaconsfield, A formal neo-Georgian house was in need of redesigning the overgrown garden. The client brief was to create a colourful and contemporary garden and in tune with the style of the architecture.

I introduced valuable evergreen hedging and strategically placed topiaries to echo with the formality of the house. When selecting the herbaceous plant, we paid special attention to form, texture, structure, scale so to maintain a year-long interest.   Then ornamental grasses were brought in to soften up and to link the contrasting groups of herbaceous plants into a harmonious view. Last but not the least, I designed an area for the client to grow their own vegetables and soft fruits.

Project status: Ongoing, to be completed in April 2024
